Hairpin after hairpin, the road climbs towards the pass. The scenery changes around every curve, and the higher you climb, the further your gaze is swept away, over the impressive peaks of the Dolomites. For motorcyclists, these corners on the roads ascending and descending the majestic mountain passes are the most fun you can have. And during a motor cycling holiday in the Puster Valley and Alto Adige, motor bike lovers can conquer some of the most famous passes in the world - which are to be found in the vicinity of Hotel Schmalzlhof.
Therefore, it is the perfect central starting point, not just for pleasant trips through the valley floor, but especially for the best motor biking tours through the Puster Valley and over the Dolomite passes.
The Staller Saddle, between Italy and Austria, is a "must" for any biker. It connects the Defereggen Valley in the East Tyrol with the Antholz Valley, reaching an altitude of 2052 m. This pass is well-known and beloved by bikers - and many more - and is open from May until the end of October. Attention: traffic is alternating one way. From Antholz to the East Tyrol, you can pass through between the 30th and 45th minute of every hour. Vice versa, from Tyrol to Antholz, you can pass for the first 15 minutes of each hour.
From the picturesque Lake Antholz, a series of hairpins climb up to the pass. Once arrived at the top, it is advisable to stop and admire the spectacular alpine pass around the crystal-clear waters of the Obersee. Our advice: in June, when the rhododendrons are in bloom, the Staller Saddle is a true marvel.
After a restorative break, you descend through the more hairpins, into the Defreggen Valley, where you will be able to choose whether to turn back or to continue your tour. There is certainly no lack of opportunities: for example, to continue on to Lienz, to ascend the Grossglockner or to turn left, towards the Felbertauern Pass to Salzburg.
